Tax-Free Zone

A performance experiment in sound, embodiment, and materiality — tracing the industrial landscape of 1960s Taiwan through live textile sound, thread, and body.

About Tax-Free Zone is inspired by the export processing industry of 1960s Taiwan. Growing up in Tanzhi — a town known for its tax-free zone of processing factories — Vera finds the industrial atmosphere of her hometown deeply embedded in her body: a persistent pull toward mechanical sounds, rigged patterns, and production.

In the performance, sounds of textile destruction and making are recorded live, looped mechanically, rendering the industry tangible through audio. Performers weave through the space, connected by a fluctuating thread tangled around their bodies, continuously negotiating for chances to move, to turn, to untangle. After the performers leave, the thread remains — a painting, or a sculpture.

This work is an experiment in realising industrial embodiment across three dimensions: sound, performance, and scenography.
